INFORMATION GUIDE

Tips & tricks for winter babywearing

Remember that the carrier counts for 1 layer: dress your child as you would yourself, but keep in mind that the baby carrier or wrap functions as a layer on its own.

Use woolen socks: use thick woolen socks to keep your little one’s toes warm. Wool is a great temperature regulator! Check out these cute socks made from alpaca wool.

Use leg warmers or knee socks: leg warmers or knee socks are a great way to keep your baby’s legs, but also arms warm! Especially when it’s not that cold outside and you don’t need a coat yet. Our daughter was one little hottie, so we usually went outside with only a jumper, a baby wrap, some leg warmers and our babywearing jacket. Check out these cute leg warmers and these funky knee socks for newborns.

Put your baby on as fast as possible or better yet: inside (the car): try to prevent putting your baby in the cold without winter clothes. Especially when you’re using a baby carrier warm cover or a baby carrier coat, your little one will be in their regular clothes for a bit. You can prepare your carrier or wrap ahead (snap the waist belt, use a carry you can tie upfront,…) or – even better – put your baby in while you’re still in the car!

Ways to carry your baby in winter

Carry your baby over your coat and with their own winter jacket

If you need to stay outside when your little one is out of the wrap or baby carrier, it’s a good idea to dress both of you in appropriate winter gear. This way you prevent having to don your baby’s winter jacket and yours in the cold when you take them down. However, it is far from comfortable, both for you and baby and you will lose the benefit of the shared body heat. Especially when you’ve got an active toddler that still wants to be carried frequently, there might be no other way than to carry them over your coat.

Carry your baby over your coat with a baby carrier winter cover

Another option is to wear a winter coat yourself and carry your baby on top of it, but with a babywearing cover to protect them from the cold rather than their own jacket. This will make your baby feel less like a little chubby Michelin man. Another benefit is that you can take off the cover once you enter a shop or building and leave your baby on your belly or back.

Your little one will be covered from the top all the way to their legs (with an elasticized bottom which tucks nicely over their feet). You can snap a weather cover onto the shoulder straps of baby carriers but a lot of people use them with baby wraps as well.

You can either choose a babywearing fleece cover for cold temperatures or a baby carrier rain cover to keep your baby dry. Some brands (such as Ergobaby) even allow them to snap together).

Carry your baby with a baby carrier jacket that will keep both of you warm

Our preferred way to carry a baby in winter is by using a special babywearing winter coat. This type of jacket has an extra panel that you can put either on the front or on the back. This creates extra space for your baby while they are on your belly or back. You can easily zip it (partially) open if they’re feeling too hot (which happened a lot with our daughter) of take it off completely when you’re getting inside (great for shopping).

In contrast to a fleece baby carrier cover, you get to take off your own jacket as well, which is a benefit if you are entering a busy store or something alike.

A baby carrier sweater is a great alternative if it’s not too cold or if you’re looking for a budget-friendly option. You can either wear it separately or add your own winter coat afterwards. The babywearing sweater will keep your child and your front warm.

Similarly, you can use a babywearing poncho to keep your little one and yourself dry when it’s raining but not overly cold.

PRODUCTS

The best baby carrier cover

Ergobaby fleece cover

PRO

  • water-resistant
  • compatible with most baby carriers
  • can be combined with the Ergobaby rain cover for an optimal protection

CON

  • difficult to align all the buttons (you have to improvise)
  • tends to fall ‘bulky’
  • not for baby wraps or ringslings
  • annoying to put on and off
  • only front-inward carrying

If you’re wondering how to keep your baby warm in a carrier, the Ergobaby cover is a great solution!

Its water-resistant shell will protect your little one from the rain or snow, while the fleece lining provides the necessary warmth, making it feel like a baby carrier blanket.

You can snap the Ergobaby winter weather cover on to the shoulder straps of your Ergobaby carrier, but it is compatible with most other baby carriers as well (although the shoulder strap covers won’t fit!). This doesn’t mean all the snaps will line up perfectly, but you can make it work just fine. If you happen to have an older Ergobaby carrier version, you can ask the company for extensions to make it fit.

You should, however, be aware that putting it on and off can be rather annoying because you have to find the right male and female snaps. Many parents prefer to attach it to the carrier before they put it on, which makes it not the best choice for

The Ergo winter cover is only suitable for use on the front-inward carry position. Furthermore, you should be aware that you can’t use it in very cold weather. Temperatures in the 40’s and 50’s (5-10°C) are about as low as it will go.

The Ergobaby winter cover comes with a hood that will help you shield your baby from the rain or cold wind. However, it lacks strings, so it can be difficult to keep it on baby’s head when there’s a lot of wind.

For cold and bad weather at the same time, you can always attach the Ergo rain cover to the fleece cover for a complete protection.

Didymos Wool or Tactel & Fleece cover

PRO

  • can be used on any baby carrier: SSC, wrap, ringsling,..
  • front, hip & back carries
  • pocket for items/hands

CON

  • expensive
  • up until 86cm

When you are looking for a winter baby carrier cover, the Didymos covers are a great choice!

They’re not the cheapest, but still a lot more affordable than a winter coat baby carrier.

As you can adjust them with straps that go around your back, you can use it on any baby carrier or baby wrap. It is suitable for front, back or even hip carries. As a matter of fact, you can even use it on a car seat!

The pocket on the front is convenient for small items, but it’s a great way to keep your hands warm (and you get to hug your baby!). Furthermore, you can roll up the hood to make a headrest.

You can choose between the Wool cover and the Tactel & Fleece cover.

The former is made from boiled wool which is water-resistant and cozy warm.

The latter is made from Tactel, which is wind and water-resistant. The fleece lining will keep your little one nice and warm.

The winter carrier covers are available in 2 sizes: size 1 will fit a baby up until 29″ (74cm), while size 2 goes up to 34″ (86cm). They come in red, blue and anthracite.

You can buy one of these gorgeous babywearing winter covers in the 5-star Canadian babywearing webshop Little Zen One. They offer free worldwide shipping and a $10 discount when you buy over $100!

7 A.M. Pookie Poncho

PRO

  • extra warm: sufficient for cold winter weather
  • large (long use)
  • multifunctional (baby carrier, car seat, stroller blanket)

CON

  • infant hood doesn’t offer much protection
  • buttoned openings for your hands let cold air in
  • not for baby wraps and ringslings

If you are looking for an extra warm baby carrier cover, you will be best off with the 7AM Pookie Poncho.

Thanks to the 2 interchangeable hoods, you can use the warm cover not only for your baby carrier but for the car seat and as a stroller cover as well! The first hood is meant for infants in the baby carrier facing their parent, while the second one is bigger – toddler size – and can be used in the car seat or stroller. Especially the smaller hood doesn’t offer the best protection against the rain and the wind.

There’s a lot of space for your baby’s legs in the pouch of the cover and there are some buttoned openings where you can put your own hands in to keep them warm. However, it is NOT a separate pocket, so it allows cold air to seep in through the buttons. The same goes for the baby carrier hood: the buttons are too far apart and thus cold air can get in.

The baby cover carrier is machine washable and you can put it in the tumble dryer, which is always convenient with young children.

Attaching the cover is simple with 2 velcro loops onto the carrier, stroller or car seat. However, because of those straps, they don’t create a cozy cocoon-like feeling for your baby. Furthermore, there’s always a risk that cold air comes in through the sides.

The baby carrier poncho is available in several colors and should fit your child – in theory – up until 4 years. While that age might be slightly exaggerated, it should be more than fine well into toddlerhood.

Bebamour Universal Hoodie

PRO

  • cheapest option
  • fits on every baby carrier with shoulder straps
  • multifunctional (baby carrier, car seat, stroller blanket)
  • large pocket for warm hands
  • carry front inward, front outward, back

CON

  • thin (not warm enough for winter weather)
  • not machine washable
  • not for baby wraps and ringslings

The Bebamour Universal Hoodie is a baby carrier warm cover made out of Nylon and lined with Polyester.

It functions as a baby carrier poncho and it fits on every baby carrier with 2 buckles on the shoulder straps. Because you attach it to your own body at the waist, it stays on pretty well. You can also use it as a stroller blanket or car seat cover.

A big plus is the large pocket in the front that you can use to keep your hands warm. On top of that, there are some zippers on both sides of the cover that you can either close on cold days or open up when it’s a bit warmer and baby’s feet are getting hot. The elastics on the bottom make sure your little one’s feet stay covered.

The hat is detachable and reversible, so whichever way you prefer to carry your child, you can use it.

This baby cover for carrier isn’t machine washable. You can only hand wash with a mild detergent. Many parents have noted that the fabric is quite thin and will not be sufficient for real winter weather. Make sure to dress your child appropriately underneath!

The baby carrier blanket cover is pretty long so it will last a couple of seasons. The cover is available in dark blue and dark grey.

The best rain carrier covers for baby

We could not find a waterproof baby carrier cover. Like most of the jackets and winter covers, the rain covers are only water-resistant.

Ergobaby rain cover

PRO

  • can be combined with the Ergobaby cover winter for the best protection
  • water-resistant
  • compatible with most baby carriers
  • no fleece lining, so perfect for rainy days in summer

CON

  • difficult to align all the buttons (you have to improvise)
  • tends to fall ‘bulky’
  • not for baby wraps or ringslings
  • annoying to put on and off
    only front-inward carrying

For rainy days, you will be better off with the Ergobaby rain cover. This water-resistant cover doesn’t have a fleece lining, which makes it more suitable for rainy summer, late spring or early autumn-days. For cold and bad weather you can always attach the rain cover to the fleece cover, so you’ll have the best protection.

As it is completely the same as the Ergo weather cover for winter except for the fleece lining, take a look at the review of the winter cover if you’d like to read more about its features and some points of criticism.

LilléBaby rain cover

PRO

  • water-resistant
  • easy to put on
  • pocket on the front

CON

  • only for LilléBaby carriers

If you own a LilléBaby carrier, you might want to invest in this carrier cover that is made out of 100% polyester with a water-resistant coating.

It’s easy to snap the waterproof baby carrier cover onto the male snaps on the shoulder straps. The hood will protect your little one from the wind or the rain.

Many parents use this baby carrier cover for rain but also as a windbreaker. The pocket on the front comes in handy to tuck away some small items.

It will fit toddlers up until 2-2,5 years easily.

The best babywearing coat

Angel Wings Softshell Jacket

PRO

  • all-year-round use
  • wind + water-resistant
  • 4-in-1 (pregnancy, front, back, without child)
  • 2 inserts: great for tandem babywearing
  • with baby hood

CON

  • needs additional sweater in winter weather
  • sporty look (this can be a pro too 🙂 )

The softshell material is perfect for outdoors as it is wind and water-resistant and very lightweight. Combined with a babywearing fleece sweater you can even make it winterproof.

Angel Wings Winter Coat

PRO

  • fashionable
  • water resistant + wind proof
  • warm enough for winter
  • 3-in-1 (front, back, without child)
  • 2 inserts: great for tandem babywearing

CON

  • baby hood is not sufficient to shield them from rain or snow

The Angel Wings Babywearing Winter Coat is a beautiful baby carrier cover coat that is not only comfortable to wear your child, but looks so very nice at the same time!

Thanks to the thermo fleece you and your baby will be snuggly warm, while the outer material is water resistant and windproof.

You can carry your baby on the back and on the front, without a child or with 2 children at the same time (thanks to the 2 separate inserts, one for small children and one for toddlers/preschoolers).

  • wind and waterproof

CON

  • expensive!

With this babywearing fleece jacket you can carry your little one on the front and on the back or you can wear it without baby and still look great.

Like the Angel Wings Softshell Jacket, it is made out of softshell which gives it its wind and waterproof qualities. However, thanks to the micropolyester inside layer, you won’t feel cold at all. The parka is also longer than the regular jacket, which will help keep both of you warm.

Angel wings Wool Coat

PRO

  • classical look
  • customized thanks to the special button system
  • thermoregulating capacities of wool

CON

  • bit DIY with the special button system
  • not water or windproof

If you’re looking for a classic winter coat that you can still wear after your baby grows out of the carrier, the Angel Wings Woolen Coat is it!

Thanks to the wrap front with a special smart buttoning system, nobody will guess this was once a babywearing coat. 2 inner buttons have a fixed position that will keep the shape of the coat, but the other buttons have a ‘fix & screw’-system, meaning that you can place them exactly where you need them. Don’t worry, the package comes with a manual and an instruction video.

As it is made of 80% wool you will benefit from its natural thermoregulating abilities. While it can stand a bit of gentle rain, it is not water nor windproof!

The best babywearing hoodie

Belly Bedaine Hoodies

PRO

  • wear on the front, back and during pregnancy
  • side zipper for easy on and off

CON

  • thin sweater (although the Kuuma is thicker)

The Belly Bedaine mom and baby hoodie carriers are a great choice when you’re choosing a sweater for babywearing.

You can carry your child on the front, the back or during pregnancy with this hoodie in knitted jersey fabric. It’s very easy to use as you just slide it over your baby carrier. Thanks to a side zipper, the hoodie over baby carrier is easy to get on and off.

You can buy this baby carrier hoodie sweatshirt in 3 designs:

  • Kangaroo: regular version
  • Kiroo: longer than the Kangaroo
  • Kuuma: longer than the Kangaroo and thicker than the other two. Because of that thickness it is a bit less stretchy (so you might need some practice to put it over a back carry).

Don’t mistake this for a hoodie with baby carrier built in! You need to put it over a baby carrier! This is not a Kangaroo hoodie, nor do we recommend those.

You can buy one of these gorgeous babywearing winter covers in the 5-star Canadian babywearing webshop Little Zen One. They offer free worldwide shipping and a $10 discount when you buy over $100!

The best babywearing hoodie for men

Be aware that the Angel Wings sweater is the only mens hoodie that fits over baby carrier we could find! You’ll come across a lot of the so-called Kangaroo hoodies on Amazon, but you’re supposed to put your baby in the front pouch without a baby carrier. However, carrying your child without proper support is DANGEROUS!
